Classroom Table & Chair Height Guide

What is BS EN1729?

All educational furniture in the UK is required to meet the BS EN1729 standard, which ensures that it is suitable and safe for use in educational settings. As well as safety requirements and test methods, the standard also sets 6 ideal table and chair heights in relation to a child's age or average height for an age category.

The 6 education standard furniture sizes

For each furniture size mark, there is an age range, stature range, and fixed chair/seat and table height.

Stature is the distance between the floor and the top of a child's head.

The seat height is measured from the floor to the back of the knee when seated.

The table height is measured from the floor to the underside of the elbow when seated.

The table below lists all the information for each size mark. Some tables and chairs have colour-coded feet for easy reference to BS EN1729 size marks, which is particularly handy if you are looking to match to existing furniture or when moving furniture between classrooms.
